West Mercia Women’s Aid was delighted to be invited to speak at a recent meeting of Wye Women’s WI, where members demonstrated extraordinary generosity, compassion, and community spirit in support of women and children affected by domestic abuse.
Our CEO, Sue Coleman attended the event as a guest speaker in April and received an incredibly warm welcome from the group. The evening provided an opportunity to share more about the work of WMWA, the realities facing survivors of domestic abuse, and the importance of community support in helping women and children rebuild their lives safely.
One of the most touching contributions from the group was the creation of handmade drawstring toiletry bags for women arriving in refuge. These practical gifts will be used to provide toiletries and essential items to new residents, helping women and children feel welcomed, cared for, and valued during what is often one of the most difficult times in their lives.
Alongside their thoughtful donations, members of Wye Women’s WI also raised £105.50 for WMWA during the evening. In addition, 24 members signed up to become supporters and receive our monthly newsletter – the highest number of supporter sign-ups recorded at any recent talk or community event!
Beyond the fundraising, the evening highlighted the power of women supporting women. Conversations shared over tea reflected the wealth of experience, knowledge, and kindness within the group, as well as a strong collective commitment to supporting survivors within the local community.
Community groups like Wye Women’s WI play an important role in helping raise awareness of domestic abuse and ensuring survivors know they are not alone. Whether through fundraising, practical donations, or simply helping start important conversations, every act of support helps make a difference.
