We are delighted to announce that, thanks to additional funding through the Armed Forces Covenant, the Penelope Project will now extend its vital support to RAF Cosford and RAF Shawbury. This expansion follows the success of the first phase, which has already provided confidential domestic abuse support to personnel and families from other military communities within Hereford and Shropshire.
The Penelope Project provides confidential, independent domestic abuse advice and support from specialist workers who not only understand domestic abuse but also the unique challenges of military life. A key feature of the project is building trusted relationships with personnel in what can be an understandably guarded environment. This funding now allows us to bring that vital support to more military communities.
Why This Work is Needed
Domestic abuse in military communities can be particularly hidden, with unique pressures on serving personnel and their families making early intervention even more difficult. The Penelope Project addresses this by providing independent, specialist support, ensuring that survivors can access help in a safe and understanding environment. Our approach focuses on fostering trust and working closely with key personnel to create an open pathway for those who need support.
The Impact of This Funding
This new funding will significantly increase community capacity by:
- Training Domestic Abuse Ambassadors to identify and support those at risk
- Running drop-in clinics for advice and support
- Training welfare officers on domestic abuse awareness and response
- Advocating on behalf of survivors with relevant partners
- Providing tailored one-to-one support
It is a privilege to build trusted relationships within these military communities. Our independent evaluation incorporates the voices of survivors, helping us to identify barriers and improve the response to domestic abuse. The knowledge and experience gained through the Penelope Project will continue to inform and enhance our support for military personnel and their families for years to come.
