Every Christmas, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of people across West Mercia. Each and every donation of gifts, food, and vouchers makes a huge difference to the women and children we support. It allows women who have very little, to give presents to their children that they otherwise could not afford. Sometimes, it’s even more special – helping children wrap gifts for their mums. For families in refuge, Christmas can be filled with the kind of joy and fun they haven’t known for a very long time.

One of the most precious things about this time of year is meeting truly inspirational people. Just before Christmas, out of the blue, we were contacted by Amanda and her son Nick. They had filled gift bags full of lovely new clothes, toiletries, and toys to be given to women and children in our refuges in Kidderminster.

Amanda, who runs her own successful business, VGF Cakes and Bakes, shared why supporting West Mercia Women’s Aid is so important to her:

“I am so pleased the gift bags brought a small piece of joy at this time of year. I have six granddaughters who always have an amazing Christmas. As a child, my sisters and I were brought up in an abusive household because of my father, but we have all grown up to be successful in our own rights. We didn’t have a lot, but we had our home thanks to a hardworking mum, who turns 88 next week. I just wanted to spread a little joy to those who find themselves in a situation not of their doing. I run a business called VGF Bakes and Cakes, so donating something small was an absolute pleasure.”

Amanda’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and giving back. From surviving domestic abuse to building a thriving business and supporting others, she embodies the spirit of this season. Her kindness, alongside Nick’s, helped make a group of women and children feel seen and remembered at Christmas – a feeling that can be rare for those struggling to rebuild their lives after abuse.

Heartfelt thanks go to Amanda and her family, not only for the gifts but for their thoughtfulness and generosity. Struggling through life with domestic abuse can be isolating, leaving people with little more than the echo of their own thoughts and the sense that no one else knows they exist or matter. Moments like this – gifts given with love, by people they have never met – can melt away those feelings and remind women and children that they are seen, valued, and deserve joy.

This Christmas and New Year, as we reflect on the kindness of our supporters, we are reminded that your generosity truly changes lives. Thank you for helping women like Amanda give back and for helping to make the festive season a time of hope, love, and light.
